Approach

Literacy Academy Collective

We provided grants to Literacy Academy Collective (LAC), led by our Heckscher Leadership Fellow, Ruth Genn, to create the first New York City public K-8 school that will provide scientifically proven instruction to support students with dyslexia and other struggling readers. In Summer 2021, Literacy Academy Collective successfully piloted an intensive, evidence-based reading intervention for struggling readers with learning differences.

In Fall 2022, Literacy Academy Collective created model classrooms that provided direct instruction in reading and written expression across all content areas (social studies, math, science, etc.). These models created training and practicum opportunity for LAC founding school leadership team and teachers. Pilot students made 1.12 years worth of progress in just seven months. LAC is opening its full P.S. school in fall 2023 in District 7 in the Bronx.

This grant led to full (including financial) support from the DOE. Click here to learn more about this support.

Literacy Academy Collective is working closely with the renowned Winward Institute – a leading expert in providing evidence-based instruction to students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities.

We have an investor who’s willing to take risks and think about ‘how do we move the needle on some of these issues?
