Minority Workers Training Program
The Foundation supported the Minority Worker Training Program (MWTP), which is a comprehensive job training program focused on career opportunities in construction, green sector, and environmental remediation. The program provides 16 weeks of training for New York City minority youth. MWTP reaches out to employed and unemployed individuals from communities at risk in the New York City area. By providing a holistic approach that combines an extensive vocational curriculum with computer and life skills training, the program seeks to ensure that trainees are able to secure jobs.
MWTP provides vocational skills in the building trades, with the goal to prepare individuals to join a building trade union, which allows access to be employed in several different areas of the construction industry, including environmental remediation. It also ensures that trainees receive training that addresses safe work practices for employment in hazardous settings such as handling of asbestos, lead abatement and redevelopment of formerly hazardous sites. Its training curriculum includes academic classes and professional development counseling.
