Green City Force
The Foundation supported Green City Force, which prepares young people from low income backgrounds for sustainable careers, while reducing green-house gas emissions. In 2011, Green City Force engaged young people living in impoverished neighborhoods in New York City, many from local housing projects. Seventy-five percent of its recruits had no income in the year leading up to the program. Seventy-six percent of Green City Force participants graduated from the 6-month program and of the graduates, 65% are placed in full-time employment in the rapidly-growing field of energy efficiency. The program’s young graduates demonstrate a job retention rate of 88% after 6 months and 18% are in college or advanced training.
