Swim for Life NYC
To dramatically improve collaboration between public agencies and private organizations to deliver swim instruction and provide access to facilities to less advantaged minority children in New York’s public schools, the Foundation underwrote Swim for Life NYC, a unique pilot program that teaches 2nd graders to swim through a standardized curriculum based on low student-to-instructor ratio for maximum individualized instruction, using a 10-session over 10 weeks model. The program includes facilities sharing, usage monitoring and complimentary unlimited memberships for participating students and their families to local NYC Parks Department recreation centers.
By marshalling the resources of Department of Education, the YMCA, Asphalt Green and others, Swim for Life NYC permits the New York City Parks Department to now bring swim instruction to 70,000 second graders. A successful pilot will provide momentum for a fundraising campaign, soliciting both public and private funding for the Swim for Life NYC model.
