Student Sponsor Partnership

Responding to the “drop out crisis” among low-income, minority children attending large, public schools, where an estimated 7,000 students drop out each day, the Foundation introduced Student Sponsor Partnership (SSP) to provide tuition assistance and tailored tutoring to a group of “Heckscher Strivers” high school students in the class of 2015.

In collaboration with social services agencies, SSP identifies students who are affected by an unstable home life and situated to benefit by SSP's nurturing school environment and one-to-one mentoring, such as foster children and children whose families require preventive services.

In addition to the tuition support, SSP pairs each student with an adult mentor to befriend and advise the Heckscher Strivers over their four years of high school. SSP also works with social services agencies to provide students supplemental tutoring prior to and throughout high school, as well as additional training for their adult mentors to prepare them to address situational concerns.
