The Heckscher Foundation Funds Pilot Program with the Department of Education’s Office of School Food

Drawing on research showing that eating breakfast leads to improved educational outcomes for children, the Foundation funded a pilot program with the Department of Education’s Office of School Food to serve breakfast in public school classrooms. During the 2007-8 school year, 28 schools citywide experimented with different models such as “grab-and-go,” a new healthy menu, and attractive promotional materials. The overwhelming success of the initiative – some 3,200 breakfasts served daily to positive reviews from students, teachers and parents – led School Food to bring another 20+ schools online in fall 2008.
