Foundation Supports New GED Education Centers Throughout Five Boroughs

Date: 10/10/07

This fall the NYC Department of Education overhauled its GED programs, creating five borough-based “hubs” where students can reconnect to education and, after assessment, either receive GED instruction onsite or be referred to accredited neighborhood service providers. These hubs will serve at least 15,000 students during the 2007-8 school year. The Heckscher Foundation helped District 79, which oversees alternative high schools and programs citywide, to launch the hubs with a grant for professional development. Staff will receive a year-long series of trainings to maximize their abilities to motivate, teach and retain young people who are working toward their GEDs and a better future.
