The Heckscher Foundation's Foster Care Project Praised

Date: 08/08/07

In his recent article "Soothing Growing Pains with Matching Grants," published by City Limits.org,  Adam F. Hutton reports on the issues related to adults who have grown up in the foster care system. Statistically, these individuals are "more likely than their peers with family support to be homeless, get in trouble with the law and suffer from substance abuse or mental health problems."  As they age out of the foster care system, many are left without adequate support. In the article, Mr. Hutton draws attention to the Heckscher Foundation's Foster Care Project, as the city's Administration for Children's Services (ACS) increasingly turn to nonprofits  to fill the gap in helping to prepare foster care youth to succeed once they leave system.
