Heckscher Foundation sponsors study on NYC Extended Day Schooling
Date: 07/30/07
The Heckscher Foundation is sponsoring a research study to be undertaken at the National Center for Children and Families at Columbia University's Teachers College entitled: Extended-Day Schooling in New York City: Examining Prevalence, Content and Structure, and Academic Benefits. Extending the amount of time that children spend in school has been offered as one key element in the struggle to close the nation's achievement gap, enrich the educational experiences of all students, and increase American students' ability to compete on a global level. Research on extended school time is relatively sparse, however, leaving many unanswered questions about the content and structure of the added curriculum and the potential benefits to students. The project will address these gaps in knowledge and is expected to yield a series of products to guide funding agencies, policymakers, and school officials as they consider the implementation of extended-day schooling in New York City.
